The Office Seasons 1-5
I have read many posts about The Office and found that there are two very different opinions — like very much and keep watching; extremely boring and delete unhesitatingly. However, I myself like this play very much. Because I remains in the office every day and face various colleagues and boss as well, I can understand the pleasures and cold jokes in The Office, such as redundancies, medical insurance, romance between colleagues, one-sided love and so on.
All the characters in The Office have their own unique characteristics and personalities. Of course as a comedy, the author needs to exaggerate each role’s words and actions so as to make dramatic conflicts and win comic effects. Sourcing from the true life and transcending true life as well, at the beginning audience will find it hard to accept the actors’ gags and spoofs, even intolerable. However, when you go through this period and understand every character’s personalities well, you find it excellent and full of jokes. I didn’t love this play until Episode 3, Season 1. Here I summarize the characteristics and personalities of the actors.
First of all it is the life of this office — Manager Michael.
The main plots in The Office all revolve around Michael. Michael, who is unmarried (maybe never has a girlfriend), rose from salesman. He regards himself as the best boss all over the world. He particularly likes his female boss Jane and every time when he meets Jane, he speaks incoherently and talks nonsense.
Michael’s words and deeds cannot be understood from a reasonable person’s standpoint. For example in the episode of Medical Insurance (Epesode 3, Season 1), Michael cut down the insured amount and content and of course his subordinates opposed strongly. In order to comfort everyone’s sentiment, without thinking he said he had got ready for everyone’s surprise. However, Michael did not know what the surprise was himself. It cost money to prepare a surprise but he wouldn’t like to spend. Then what will Michael do? He went to a travel agency and asked whether there was tourist line of free transport, free accommodation, free catering or free charged gamblight counters. From their expressions, the guys in the travel agency must regard Michael as a fool.
However, Michael is a kind-hearted man in a sort. He had ever held a funeral for a dead bird with tears in his eyes. But he chose the parking area as the place and asked everyone to attend. With curious onlookers, Michael made everyone in an embarrassing position again.
As a manager, Michael has his own ortstanding point. With a salesman background, he has rich market experience and accurately grasping of customers’ real requirement. He can obtain orders in a confabulation. At this moment, female boss Jane will show a favorable and ambiguous smile.
The romantic relationship between Michael and his female boss Jane is one of the attractive points of The Office. Jane is a typical Ameican professional woman, beautiful, shrewd and capable, but cannot deal with family well as well (She’s been divorced.). She feels helpless when faced with Michael. Jane is strict and serious on the surface but sensitive and weak in the depth of her heart. Others will wonder, as a boss, how can Jane accept such a subordinate like Michael. Obnoxious Michael has a strange appeal for Jane thought he makes her in an embarrassing position in the presence of the colleague.
Michael has his own loveliness, but more shortcomings.
