How the Greatest Watch Making Myth of All Surrounds the Rolex Daytona
Not so long ago, in Italy, 1985 Rolex watches received some simple publicity that kicked off the legend of the most famous of all designer watches. A racing magazine cover shot of G. Agnelli wearing a classic Daytona with light blue dial sparked a chain of gossip that darted around the globe led it to becoming the most famous of all Rolex watches.
The Daytona, previously had never really found its audience, though it had been in production for twenty two years. So what caused this designer watches craze?
Today everyone from the CEO at Rolex to the replica and fake Rolex watches dealers would like to know exactly what did it. Though, to me, it’s simple. It was only a matter of time before a watch of this quality and style become the collector’s obsession it is today. All it took was a break like the photo shoot that got people talking about it enough to start the craze. Its hard to say exactly when replica Rolex watches manufacture began but there is evidence to suggest that around the same time as the G. Agnelli photo, in the mid-eighties some of the first Daytona replicas were being circulated. This leads many to speculate that the replicas actually served to broaden the public interest and increase the watch’s visibility. This argument has popped up in many circles as sales of Rolex often seem helped along by the prominence of the fakes.
The Daytona legend, though not really publicly popular until the eighties really has its roots in the seventies, surrounding one of Hollywood’s most legendary hunks, Paul Newman. Special edition Newman Daytona’s began to spark incredible interest in the 80’s when designer watches were the hottest luxury item going. Nowadays Paul Newman Rolexes sell to collectors for double what the original models do.
