Widescreen Monitors
A guide to the pro’s and con’s of a widescreen monitor.
Pros
- Since many modern DVDs and some TV shows are in a widescreen format, these types of displays are ideal for watching them on your computer
- When reading books online for example a user would have a full-range view of either two smaller pages simultaneously as a book or a whole single page when the user turns display vertically (in monitors that have this option).
- Most non-linear digital video editing software benefits more from horizontal space than from vertical space.
- An extremely small number of computer games run at a native 640×400 resolution, making them exceptionally well-suited to 8:5 monitors. A slightly larger number can be set to either widescreen or full screen, with the widescreen options offering wider horizontal fields of view without sacrificing vertical FOV.
Cons.
- Computer programs often have many toolbars, which take up lots of vertical space. Many web pages aggravate the issue by taking additional vertical space for tabs and the header. This is especially problematic on lower-resolution monitors, where only half of the screen may be available for the scrollable text.
- Most word processing tasks require documents in portrait form, rather than landscape; many web pages are similarly formatted for a limited width and unlimited height; and computer code usually consists of a great many lines of code, each relatively short. For all of these purposes, extra screen space at the sides is wasted, and only vertical space matters. Text content that is not fixed in width can be harder to read on a wide page than on a taller, narrower one.
- Although nearly every computer game in history will look fine on a full screen display, a huge majority of them are very poorly suited to a widescreen monitor, as they will either become warped or not fill the whole screen
- Many DVDs are full screen, and are obviously best suited to a full screen monitor.
- Most early widescreen laptops were just wider (but not shorter) versions of their 4:3 counterparts. This resulted in a keyboard in the centre of the laptop but very wide unused areas on the sides of the keyboard.
- Most photographs are taken in close to 4:3 format, so viewing these on a widescreen monitor causes black bands on the left and right edges of the screen.
It is very important to choose a good quality <a href=”http://www.moneysupermarket.com/c/shopping/sc/computer-and-software/pc-monitors-and-accessories/”>widescreen monitor > , there are so many cheap monitors on the market now that finding one to fit your budget and needs shouldn’t be too tasking.
