Gearing up for the Oscars
The 82nd Academy Awards took place in March 2010, a ceremony established to honour the best of cinema that graced the big screen over the past year. As it has been for almost a decade, this year’s Oscars took place in their current home of the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, and eager celebrity spotters got to see a plethora of stars from the world over walk up the theatre’s illustrious red carpet.
The Oscars was created as an awards ceremony where instances of excellence in the film industry are rewarded with fame, recognition and, of course, that iconic golden statue. An Oscar award is given out for various aspects of a film, from production and editing to the cast themselves. It is one of the most prestigious awards ceremonies taking place in the world today and is watched by millions of viewers on television each year.
Millions watched the show from home with the main attraction of which being its two hosts: Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. Both exceedingly popular for their work in television and film, the pair had been stirring up a storm of anticipation of what was to come in this year’s ceremony. Martin returned to the host platform for the third time but this year signalled Baldwin’s debut as a host – but it appears he is more than looking forward to returning if given the chance!
This year, the Academy Awards gave limelight to many films, particularly successful were The Hurt Locker, Disney-Pixar’s Up and Avatar.
From the action-packed animation of blockbuster hit Avatar to sombre war thriller The Hurt Locker, films from every category had been entered into the race to compete for best picture, best original screenplay and many other accolades. Many people’s eyes were on James Cameron’s action flick Avatar, which has been nominated for a stunning nine awards – almost as much as his unforgotten landslide victory a decade ago with Titanic. On the night, Avatar won three awards – for Art Direction, Cinematography and Visual Effects.
Of course, while not all of us – barely any, in fact – will get a chance to view the ceremony in person, there’s always high quality Sky HD which allowed viewers to enjoy seeing every detail perfectly.
After the ceremony many of the films enjoy a resurgence in the cinema, through DVD sales or by being shown on TV, although many people simply prefer to watch the glitz and glamour of the awards show than seeing all the films up for nomination.
