Singing Along With “glee” On Satellite Tv
Who knew that the musical was going to enjoy such a revival, especially amongst teenagers and preteens? After the success of Disney’s “High School Musical” franchise, it was definitely time for a show that had a little bit more comedy and could appeal to adults as well as their children. Enter “Glee,” which in just a couple of seasons on television has managed to wow critics, delight audiences, and get songs stuck in practically everyone’s head.
The absolute biggest reason to tune into “Glee” on satellite tv is Jane Lynch’s performance. Those who are huge Christopher Guest fans will recognize her from her roles in everything from “Best in Show” to “A Mighty Wind,” where her deadpan humor practically stole the show every single time. Those who aren’t into the quirky pseudo-documentaries of Guest probably know her from her recent foray into more mainstream Hollywood pictures, like Will Ferrell’s NASCAR parody film “Talladega Nights.” Either way, Lynch as an angry cheerleading coach who is insulted with the glee club’s lack of physical fitness–not to mention it siphoning money away from her department–should not be missed.
But “Glee” is definitely huge on satellite tv for a whole lot more than Lynch’s performance. Among the younger teenage viewers, there hasn’t been a male cast this hunky since “Twilight.” Teenage girls are especially aflutter over Cory Monteith, the former jock turned fabulous singer. However, most people reflecting on their high school experiences will find that there’s definitely something relatable about a group of misfits who might not necessarily find their niche in other on-campus clubs, but who enjoy being together and succeeding at their own activity.
And the glee club in “Glee,” obviously does start to succeed, even with limited funding and some singers who aren’t quite on key all of the time. Led by their capable and currently stressed out faculty advisor, they end up on the fast track to the state glee championships, despite the attempts by Jane Lynch’s cheerleading squad to sabotage their progress so there is only one winning team from the school.
The reason that “Glee” seems to work so well on satellite tv is that it was originally conceived of by its creators as a film, meaning that the storyline has already been mapped out. This means that there are a lot less twists designed for sweeps weeks, that plot is well established enough that they can just work on fixing it, and that they can focus more on things like making sure the cast can sing and dance. And since the cast definitely needs to sing and dance, this training has been pretty crucial. But all of the efforts seem to have paid off, with the current “Glee” tour featuring the actors from the show playing across the United States. Certainly most parents of preteens and teenagers have, however, already heard about that.
While it might not have swept the Emmys, “Glee” has definitely shown that the interest in musicals on satellite tv hasn’t waned, and doesn’t appear to be going anywhere anytime soon.
